In 2019, the total electricity generated in the United States was 4.1 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh). The sources of energy used to generate that electricity were as follows:

- Coal: 22.6%
- Natural Gas: 37.1%
- Nuclear: 19.7%
- Renewables: 20.6%
   - Hydropower: 6.5%
   - Wind: 7.5%
   - Solar: 2.3%
   - Biomass: 1.7%
   - Geothermal: 0.6%
- Other: 0.1%
