Offshore Wind Energy Goal

Summary

Executive Order 218, signed in June 2021, established a goal of developing 2.8 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy resources off the North Carolina coast by 2030 and 8.0 GW by 2040. The Executive Order also established the NC Taskforce for Offshore Wind Economic Resource Strategies (NC TOWERS) to provide expert advice for advancing North Carolina offshore wind energy projects, economic development, and job creation, and directed the Departments of Commerce, Military and Veterans Affairs and Environmental Quality to designate staff members as offshore wind leads.
