Wind Energy Permitting Standards

Summary

North Carolina has statewide permitting requirements for wind energy facilities. Any wind turbine or collection of wind turbines located within a half mile of each other with a collective rated capacity of one megawatt (MW) or greater must receive a permit from the Department of Environmental Quality before starting construction. The legislation provides details regarding the process and timeline for obtaining a permit, siting considerations, approval criteria, fees, and other requirements.
