Using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the Department of Energy, the city of Elyria is offering rebates to homeowners for certain energy efficiency improvements made to the home. The amount of rebate varies depending on household income and improvement made. Interested homeowners should apply before any funds are spent to ensure eligibility and reserve a rebate. Energy audits will be required as part of the application process. In general, the following projects will be eligible (all projects must be approved by the Community Development Department):
1. Energy Star Gas Furnace replacements and ductwork; chimney repair. The AFUE must be greater than or equal to 95 and must result in 15% energy use reduction (minimum). Rebate range from $1000 to $2500, depending on income.
2. Hot water heaters: tank replacement (energy factor 0.62 or greater), tankless hot water heaters, repairs. Must result in 15% energy use reduction (minimum). Rebates range from $1000 to $2500, depending on income.
3. Insulation: Attic insulation must result in 10% energy use reduction. The insulation rebate is 50% of the cost up to $1000.
In addition, there are Energy Star programmable thermostats available for the first 2300 households that apply (and qualify). The thermostats, and their professional installation, are free for qualifying homeowners through this program.
See the program guidelines for additional eligibility details and for information about required documentation verifying income. All rebates are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
