WPPI Energy offers grants from the construction of zero net energy homes in the service areas of its member utilities (see listing below) through the GreenMax home program. The grants are intended to help cover a portion of the incremental design and construction cost of homes that have the potential to produce as much energy as they consume during the year. The home should use renewable energy for on-site energy needs to the greatest extent possible. Because homeowners will receive direct benefits from living in a net zero energy home, they are expected to cover a portion of the incremental cost. Homes must be grid-connected to qualify for the grant but may also be equipped with a battery back-up system. The current Request For Proposal (RFP) will provide grants for up to three GreenMax homes. Proposals for the current round of funding must be received by April 3, 2009 for homes that will begin construction by September 1, 2009 and be completed by December 31, 2009. It is anticipated that additional RFPs will be issued for this program in the future. Homeowners, builders, architects, and school groups are eligible for grants under this program, but the grant is only intended to fund the construction of residential homes and may not be used for the construction of spec homes. A WPPI consultant will work with the grant recipient during and after the design and construction process for quality control purposes. In addition, home energy consumption will be monitored for one year after the occupant moves in. Please see the program website to view the current RFP, additional program rules, and grant selection criteria.
